Players Move, Supporters Stay: Loyalty in Trade Week
Share
The footy's barely been packed away and the phones are already running hot. Free agency opened on 2 October, the trade period kicked off on Monday 5 October and runs until the evening of Wednesday 14 October, and the headlines have been relentless. Long-serving favourites heading interstate. Veterans chasing one more chapter. Young guns asking for a fresh start. Draft picks shuffled around like a deck of cards.
If you're a supporter, trade week can feel like a strange kind of weather. One minute you're refreshing a tracker, the next you're explaining to a mate why a future second-round pick is actually a decent return. It's thrilling, it's maddening, and it's a reminder of the one truth footy never lets you forget: players move, supporters stay.
The constant in the stand
Players have careers, contracts and families to think about, and fair enough. Coaches come and go. Even grounds change names. But the person in row M with the thermos and the battered membership card? They're not going anywhere. Supporters are the one fixed point in a game that is constantly in motion.
That's why supporter culture has always run deeper than any single name on a list. You might have loved a player for a decade, and you'll always remember the goal. But the stripes on your back were there before them, and they'll still be there after.
The off-season jersey test
Here's a simple test for any supporter piece: would you still wear it in October? Not on game day, when everyone's in colours, but on a Sunday morning coffee run in the middle of trade week, when the list is in flux and the season is months away.
That's the brief we set ourselves. A jersey that works as everyday wear, not just matchday costume. Our supporter jerseys are made from heavyweight 320gsm cotton, so they have real substance and drape, soften with every wash and hold their shape season after season. Classic stripes, clean finishes, nothing that dates.
Loyalty is a lifestyle
"Born on the terraces. Worn beyond." is our way of saying that being a supporter isn't something you switch off at the final siren. It's in the way you plan your weekends, the friends you've made in the outer, the arguments you'll have about list management until the first bounce next year.
So whether your club landed the big fish this week or lost a favourite son, take a breath. The draft is in November, the pre-season is around the corner, and you'll be back in your spot soon enough, same as always.
Heritage Stripes is an independent supporter lifestyle brand. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by or licensed by the AFL or any club. We just make jerseys for the people who never change sides.
