Never Leave Early: Lessons from a Grand Final Comeback
Share
Some lessons get handed down from the outer like an old scarf. Keep your ticket stub. Bring a jumper, even in September. And whatever you do, never leave early.
If anyone needed a refresher, the 2026 Grand Final delivered it on 26 September. With under five minutes left on the clock, Fremantle led by 17 points and were within touching distance of a first-ever flag. Then Brisbane kicked four goals in the final four minutes to win 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) and complete a third straight premiership, in front of 100,023 people at the MCG. It was only the second time since 1981 that a side has won the decider after trailing at three-quarter time.
Whichever end of the ground you were on, and whichever lounge room you were shouting at, you felt it. That's the thing about footy. The result belongs to the scoreboard, but the moment belongs to everyone who stayed.
The ones who stay
Every crowd has its early leavers: the "beat the traffic" brigade, the ones checking the train timetable at the last change. And every crowd has the stayers, the people who have been burned enough times to know that a 17-point lead in the last few minutes is not a result. It's a rumour.
The stayers are who we make jerseys for. The supporter who has stood in the rain at a Round 3 dead rubber. The one who still has the jumper from the year it nearly happened. The kid who learned to count by watching goal umpires wave flags. Terrace culture isn't about winning; it's about turning up, and staying put until the siren tells you it's over.
Heartbreak and elation, same afternoon
A comeback like that leaves two kinds of supporters walking out of the ground. One lot will be telling the story at barbecues for 30 years. The other lot will need a quiet week, a long walk and possibly a new hobby (they won't take it up). Both are part of the same game, and both deserve respect. If you're nursing a broken heart this October, you're in good company: nearly every supporter base in the country has been there, and every one of them came back the next March.
That's what "Born on the terraces. Worn beyond." means to us. Footy colours aren't just for the good days. They're for the bad ones too, and for the long stretch in between when there's no game on and you wear them anyway.
Built for the long haul
We make our supporter jerseys from heavyweight 320gsm cotton because a good jersey should outlast a season, a finals heartbreak and a few hundred trips through the wash. It's the weight and feel of the old-school knits people remember, cut for wearing to the footy, the pub and the Monday after. Classic stripes, no gimmicks.
Heritage Stripes is an independent supporter lifestyle label. We're not affiliated with or licensed by the AFL or any club; we just love the game and the people who stand behind it.
So here's to the stayers. To the ones who were still on their feet when the siren went, whatever the scoreboard said. See you in March.
